5G or fifth-generation wireless communication is the latest generation of cellular communication technology proposed by the wireless mobile standard 5G New Radio (5G NR), coordinated by the global 3GPP organization (the initial standard was formulated in 2017). The previous generations are 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. Each generation brings new functions; for example, 1G is an analog voice cellular network, 2G supports SMS service, 3G supports the first mobile broadband/video call, and 4G is High-speed mobile broadband.

 

Similarly, using faster speeds and better responsiveness, 5G will improve network capabilities and support cross-user (such as AR/VR support) and enterprise applications (such as Internet of Things/Industrial Automation/Connected Cars/Autonomous Driving/Smart City) Additional features. 5G is expected to support higher data transmission rates, up to 20Gbps. Even assuming an average of 5Gb/s, it means that a 3GB high-definition movie can be downloaded in less than 5 seconds.

 

The latency reduction of 5G is also 20-30 times that of 4G. Reducing the delay to less than 10 milliseconds is very important for applications such as autonomous driving that require continuous updating of the vehicle's mobile environment. Supporting higher traffic (devices 100 times more than 4G) will be another major upgrade, which is the key to improving the functionality of virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) applications on the device.

 

In terms of physical principles, there is no obvious difference between 5G and 4G LTE networks. It just creates more network capacity by providing wider channels. However, 5G has brought fundamental changes to wireless networks in these three aspects:

Reduce latency, improve the responsiveness of the mobile experience, and support new IoT applications such as connected cars and autonomous driving;

 

The number of devices in each cell sector far exceeds 4G (Internet of Things/Smart City/AR/VR devices);

Wider channels and higher frequencies; allows access to wider channels (>100 MHz) in the millimeter wave band (high frequency spectrum)
